About Cigar City Brewing

Steeped in the unique culture and history of Tampa, Florida, Cigar City Brewing began handcrafting award-winning beer in 2009. Cigar City Brewing’s ales and lagers bring to mind the sun and citrus for which Florida is known, while taking cues from the cigar industry upon which Tampa was built. Behind all of Cigar City Brewing’s liquid is the philosophy that quality is achieved by giving first rate ingredients to first rate people in a space where they are free to pursue their passion.

Quality Ingredients

At Cigar City Brewing we make beer we like to drink and toast those who choose to drink with us. Behind all our beer is the philosophy that quality is achieved by giving first rate ingredients to first rate people in a space where they are free to pursue their passion. We acknowledge that what we do isn’t for everyone, but we welcome all.

Gluten: Cigar City Brewing uses the finest traditional and innovative ingredients in its ales and lagers. This necessitates that all Cigar City Brewing beers contain gluten and gluten-derived ingredients.

Vegan: Cigar City Brewing is proud to use no animal-derived ingredients in the clarification of its beer. No gelatin, isinglass, casein or albumen is used to clarify CCB beer.

Any product that notes it being brewed “with lactose” does contain lactose, a milk-derived sugar used to add body and sweetness to the beer. With the exception of its beers that are marked “Brewed With Lactose,” including but not limited to Cubano Espresso Brown Ale, Imperial Milk Porter and Moat Water, all Cigar City Brewing beers are conducive to a vegan lifestyle.

Shelf Life: Cigar City Brewing is dedicated to serving and delivering the highest quality ales and lagers possible, and with that comes a very conservative shelf life for our beers. All CCB cans have a “Packaged On” date printed on the bottom of the can, and all CCB bottles are etched with a “Packaged On” date on the shoulder of the bottle.

Though our Market Sales Representatives and wholesale partners work tirelessly to keep the freshest beer possible on the shelves of your favorite craft beer retailer, out-of-code product can infrequently remain in the market. If you find out-of-code CCB beer, please bring it to the attention of your retailer and they will work with our wholesale partners to replace that beer with fresh, delicious Cigar City Brewing beer.

Where it Began

Cigar City Brewing is Born

Founded by Tampa native and fifth-generation Floridian Joey Redner in 2007, Cigar City Brewing was born out of Redner’s desire to bring the unique culture, history and cuisine of Tampa to an international audience. After selecting a location for his new brewery on Spruce Street, Redner began development of the space in early 2008 while searching for a brewmaster to bring his vision to life. He found that person in Brewmaster Wayne Wambles, an Alabama native with brewing experience around the Southeast US going back to the 1990’s.  On January 30th, 2009, the very first commercial batch of Cigar City Brewing’s beer was produced: a 465 gallon batch of Maduro Brown Ale.

Experimenting With Flavors

Always looking to expand the palate of flavors at their disposal, Redner and Wambles quickly began introducing beers with unique tropical-inspired inspiration and culinary lineage, including Jai Alai IPA, Cubano Espresso Brown Ale, and the mole inspired Hunahpu’s Imperial Stout®, a massive beer brewed with cinnamon, vanilla, cacao nibs and ancho, pasilla and guajillo chile peppers. Not only did these ambitious and innovative brews gain traction in Tampa, they garnered attention from the national and international craft beer communities and helped shine a light on the efforts of the other ambitious brewers in the Tampa Bay craft beer community.

How Far We've Come

From Then to Now

Awards and accolades have followed, including gold, silver and bronze medals at the Great American Beer Festival, numerous awards at the Best Florida Beer Competition and the US Beer Tasting Championships. Joey and Wayne’s ambitious vision for Florida-inspired ales and lagers has found resonance with beer judges and beer lovers alike.

From a small two-man operation in an un-airconditioned warehouse on Spruce Street, Cigar City Brewing has grown to include over 60 full-time employees in its Tampa family and is now distributed in more than 40 states in the US and more than a dozen international markets. A partnership with Colorado-based CANarchy in 2016 has welcomed other like-minded, independent breweries into the CCB family and has allowed Cigar City Brewing’s beer to be enjoyed from coast to coast and beyond.

What's With The Cans?

Food and beverage cans are the most recycled containers in the United States. They are 100% recyclable and may be recycled repeatedly without loss of strength or quality. This preserves resources for future generations, which makes cans the most sustainable package.

  • Cans have zero light penetration.
  • Canned beverages chill faster, are easier to store, and have a longer shelf life.
  • Cans are shatter-proof. They are safer for consumers and are allowed where bottles are not, like at the beach.
  • Cans are lightweight and provide cube efficiency to allow more product to be shipped using less fuel.
  • New cans are produced with recycled aluminum, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 95%.
  • Nearly 75% of all aluminum ever produced is still in use today.
  • 68% of cans are recycled—the highest rate of any beverage container.
