Jai Alai

India Pale Ale

Did you know?

Native to the Basque region of Spain, the game of Jai Alai involves players launching a ball from a curved mitt called a cesta in an attempt to outsmart and outmaneuver their opponents on a court called a fronton. Native to Tampa, Florida, Jai Alai IPA is a bold, citrusy and balanced India Pale Ale that involves six different hop varietals used generously in a 7.5% ABV beer. While the number of frontons in our home state of Florida has dropped since the sport’s peak in the mid-1980s, Cigar City Brewing pays homage to the sport and the dedicated players and patrons who keep this Florida tradition alive with its flagship ale. Look for notes of orange peel, clementine, and light caramel to share the story and sunshine of Florida with beer lovers across the globe.

Jai Low

India Pale Ale

Did you know?

Tropical and bright with a full palate of flavor and a potency designed with moderation in mind, Jai Low IPA lowers the intensity of a typical India Pale Ale while maintaining the highest quality and hop flavor possible. All the qualities found in the finest IPAs, including citrus aromas and flavors, bread-like maltiness, and a moderate, snappy bitterness are found, making this beer a deceptively tempered addition to Cigar City Brewing’s line-up of hop-forward creations.

Florida Man

Double India Pale Ale

Did you know?

The world needs heroes, and in our home state of Florida only a very special hero will do. A hero with a shark tooth around his neck, a Grim Reaper tattoo on his arm, and a rap sheet longer than his mama’s mustache. A hero who’s forgotten more about amateur taxidermy and alligator rasslin’ than you’ll ever know. What better way to pay tribute to our beloved Florida Man than with a big ol’ Double India Pale Ale brewed with a nearly criminal amount of hops and a moderate bitterness that just about matches Florida Man’s general disposition. This hopped-up whopper of a beer is big in character and guaranteed to sear itself into your memory, just like “the world’s worst superhero,” Florida Man.

Guayabera

Citra Pale Ale

Did you know?

Traditional throughout Latin America, the guayabera shirt combines style, functionality, form, and tradition in its four-pocketed design. We at Cigar City Brewing feel the same reverence and appreciation for the guayabera that we do for the Citra hop varietal, an ingredient that imparts notes of tangerine, lime, and berries to this traditional American Pale Ale. The exclusive use of Citra hops in this beer creates a flavor that’s at once unique and recognizable, while its dry, crisp character and moderate alcohol make it as refreshing and functional as a crisp linen guayabera.

Maduro

Brown Ale

Did you know?

Among the darkest colored and most complex cigars made in Tampa’s Ybor City is the maduro, made with an overripe wrapper and exhibiting chocolaty and earthy flavors. We draw inspiration from these sophisticated cigars and from Tampa’s cigar-making history with Maduro Brown Ale, a Northern English Brown Ale brewed with flaked oats. Full in body and silky on the palate, Maduro Brown Ale’s chocolate and espresso notes are rounded out by toffee-like qualities and a light, woody hop presence. Enjoy Maduro Brown Ale with chicharrones, ropa vieja, or a fine hand-rolled cigar.

Theoretical Jam

Wheat Ale

Did you know?

Barbe Rouge, El Dorado, and Cashmere hops were selected to impart flavors of juicy red berries lending a distinct berry acidity and a lingering red grapefruit zest bitterness. These flavors paired with the wheat are reminiscent of berry jam on toast. Name a better duo.

Cosmic Crown

Belgian-Style Strong Golden Ale

Did you know?

We’ve taken inspiration from beyond the cosmos for this golden-hued Strong Golden Ale and added Galaxy hops to impart passionfruit and peach qualities to its profile of ripe fruit and light peppery spice. This deceptively devilish beer of formidable strength delivers tropical notes and a hint of spice that’s enjoyed by princes and paupers alike.

Where it Began

Cigar City Brewing is Born

Founded by Tampa native and fifth-generation Floridian Joey Redner in 2007, Cigar City Brewing was born out of Redner’s desire to bring the unique culture, history and cuisine of Tampa to an international audience. After selecting a location for his new brewery on Spruce Street, Redner began development of the space in early 2008 while searching for a brewmaster to bring his vision to life. He found that person in Brewmaster Wayne Wambles, an Alabama native with brewing experience around the Southeast US going back to the 1990’s.  On January 30th, 2009, the very first commercial batch of Cigar City Brewing’s beer was produced: a 465 gallon batch of Maduro Brown Ale.

Experimenting With Flavors

Always looking to expand the palate of flavors at their disposal, Redner and Wambles quickly began introducing beers with unique tropical-inspired inspiration and culinary lineage, including Jai Alai IPA, Cubano Espresso Brown Ale, and the mole inspired Hunahpu’s Imperial Stout®, a massive beer brewed with cinnamon, vanilla, cacao nibs and ancho, pasilla and guajillo chile peppers. Not only did these ambitious and innovative brews gain traction in Tampa, they garnered attention from the national and international craft beer communities and helped shine a light on the efforts of the other ambitious brewers in the Tampa Bay craft beer community.

How Far We've Come

From Then to Now

Awards and accolades have followed, including gold, silver and bronze medals at the Great American Beer Festival, numerous awards at the Best Florida Beer Competition and the US Beer Tasting Championships. Joey and Wayne’s ambitious vision for Florida-inspired ales and lagers has found resonance with beer judges and beer lovers alike.

From a small two-man operation in an un-airconditioned warehouse on Spruce Street, Cigar City Brewing has grown to include over 60 full-time employees in its Tampa family and is now distributed in over 30 states in the US and nearly a dozen international markets. A partnership with Colorado-based CANarchy Craft Brewery Collective in 2016 has welcomed other like-minded, independent breweries into the CCB family and has allowed Cigar City Brewing’s beer to be enjoyed from coast to coast and beyond.
