Trousseau

Madeira Barrel-aged Barleywine-style Ale

Did you know?

The Trousseau grape originates from the Jura region in the mountains of eastern France. While Trousseau may call France its original home, it’s Portugal where the dark-skinned grape has become most beloved. Known locally as Bastardo, the grape is traditionally used in the production of port wine. But on the Madeira Islands right off the coast of Portugal, it is occasionally used to make Madeira Bastardo wine. We sourced Madeira barrels right from the islands for aging this Barleywine-style Ale.

Tasting Notes

The beer’s nose of plums and toffee is perfectly complimented by vanilla and caramel-covered apple aromas from these barrels not frequently used for aging beer. Oxygen ingress during the barrel-aging process helps to accentuate flavors of tawny port, raisin pudding and toffee in this viscous, contemplative sipper.
